Resources for a new programmer

Hoping i can ping the community for some resources to get started developing plugins for vanilla 2. I've got experience with html, javascript, and python, but aside from some simple form stuff i'm pretty green at php. I've found some very basic php tutorials, but i'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations that will get me up and running. i've examined the help docs here for plugins and i get about 30% of it, so its clear i need a little more foundation on php before i dig into them.
