Custom Profile Fields

Is there an easy way to add custom profile fields? If it's a hard way, or a moderately difficult way, that's okay, too.

If anybody's inspired and experienced, a plugin would be a great idea. Or, even better, native support for custom fields.

I've heard of plugins that do this, and now that we have a UserMeta storage system it is easier than ever. If you download the PostCount plugin and look at how that is done, you can get an idea of how you might build a plugin to support your own custom fields.
