Use email address as username in authentication

My app, written in CodeIgniter 1.7.3 (CI), uses email addresses as username to sign-in users. There are first name and last name(optional) fields, but they are purely for user profile purposes. How can I make Vanilla 2.0.17.8 to accept email based login by default?
