List sub-categories on parent category page

I have a nested category "Show your work" inside the parent category "Educators".
When visiting the "Educators" category, it however says that "No discussions were found", even though there is activity in the sub-category. As the image shows, the sub-category is not even listed in the div "Tabs DiscussionsTabs". This is very misleading - is there any way of showing the activity in sub-categories or at least listing them?
