Vanilla and html?

I really want to convert my existing community to Vanilla, but the deal-breaker for me is that Vanilla, oddly, doesn't let you edit the html of pages. Am I correct that they don't allow you to edit the html? I was really hoping that there would somehow be a way to edit the html on a custom theme. Editing only the CSS and the header/footer only does so much....
