Javascript and CSS optimisation

"Pre-compress your javascript and css files to reduce latency and cpu overhead on websites." http://www.zimbra.com/blog/archives/2006/01/zimbra_ajax_css_digg.html Would this be advantageous for vanilla?

    While it certainly could be a useful thing for site administrators to do, it would be a terrible idea for mark to do, because it would slow down style and behavior modifications. If anything, the code needs to be clearer.

    Reading through the article and comments, while this seems like a great idea, it might not flow well with some browsers out there. At least as far as gzipping the file goes.

    then again, those browsers probably won't run vanilla at all...

    well, they might run vanilla, but the unconditional gzipping scheme might be more the problem.
