Make "Why do you want to join" field not required

I would like to remove the "Why do you want to join" question from the registration form. I have copied registerapproval.php to my theme's directory and made the changes to the form. However, when the form is filled out an error is returning asking users to fill out this field even though it is no longer visible.

What do I need to edit so that this field is no longer required?

BUMPing this as well - looking for a fix here. I can hide fields fine, but they're still looking for validation.
