How to add custom smarty function in a custom theme

I try to create new smarty function like
{profile_name}
but it required to be place in library/vendors/SmartyPlugins so if I upgrade my vanilla I will have to put it there again
I don't want to work with core so how to add a custom smarty function in an custom theme, I tried to create a folder vendors/SmartyPlugins/.. in my themes but it didn't work

    I think there is already a thread for this of which I was apart, unfortunately for you I can not find it. I believe the conclusion was that you should just use php.
