Progress on a version for the 2.1 branch of Vanilla

Hey all,

As I'm currently working on a version of VanillaBootstrap for the 2.1 branch of Vanilla Forums I thought I'd to share todays progress. You can see a couple of screens here: http://imgur.com/a/COyga/embed

This version will be very different from the current one, as Vanilla 2.1 introduces some cool new features that I want to utilize. I've drawn inspiration from both the Bittersweet theme bundled with the new version of Vanilla as well as Twitters dev site. It's much more minimalistic and clear than the current version and some of the new features includes the same cool subnav bar that the Bootstrap documentation site uses. I've used the ScrollToFixed plugin instead of the application.js written for the documentation site though, since it works much better.

The theme will be released alongside the new version of Vanilla (whenever that is) so you folks have an awesome theme to use right away!

P.S.: I'm sorry for spamming the forums with theme related updates, but I still have at least a dozen users of my theme here who aren't registered at my own forums.

I have been following your progress on this theme from the beginning. This version looks far better than your current theme. I'm surely in the queue for this one. Keep up the good work!

Does anyone know when 2.1 is getting released?

P.S.: I recently used Bootstrap to update my website. I customized the subnav to make it look better (in my opinion) than the Bootstrap version. If you are interested, I'll PM you the link to my site.

Me too. I wonder if it's possible for you to update your existing theme - 2.0x version - to make it look more like the 2.1 version (of course without those new 2.1 features). This is not a demand, but only a wish.

Of course, it would make sense only if 2.1 is still a few months away. Otherwise, it's better to wait.

@brainolution I can see why you'd want that, the new version does look much cleaner than the current one. I'd however update to v2.1 of Vanilla instead, as I don't think the new design would look and feel nearly as good in v2.0 as it does in v2.1. You can find the latest stable release of Vanilla here: https://github.com/vanillaforums/Garden It's still in alpha but it works like a charm anyhow. It will however require frequent updates, but personally I think it's more than worth it.

kasperisager, is the 2.1 stable release - considered the master branch tag release 2.0.18rc3. if not can you tell me which one you are suggesting.

@peregrine no 2.1 is in alpha with ongoing development. Its stable and I have been using it for quite a time but do not use it for commercial purpose.

The latest stable version is 2.0.18.4

@candyman I don't think much documentation has been released for 2.1 yet. You may want to check out Vanillaforums.com though

I figured it out last night the confusion I had is the branch and tag refers to vanillaforums-Garden-Vanilla_2.0.18rc3-

in case anybody else has the same confusion.

But it shows vanilla 2.1a16 upon installation. I installed a new test database for 2.1 and put the files under vanilla2. So I now have both versions on my test machine and I will give your bootstrap a look, as people are raving about it (although I don't have a forum per se.).

Our latest "stable" feature-set for 2.1 will be merged into master on Tuesday, and that will be 2.1a16.

There are still some features that aren't finished yet, which is why we are not ready to call it 'beta' and freeze the code.

I LOVE this theme. Its exactly what I need.

But is it compatible with the 2.1 release? I've been looking around on ghit hub (my first time there) but by the looks of it there is no 2.1 compatible release.

I'm currently working on a better optimized beta release though so I'd wait for that one if I were you :-)

I'm keen to get my forum up and running so I've gone ahead and installed the 2.0a-2.1 release. But I've run into a problem. No formatting gets applied to the theme. Not sure what the problem is... I posted about it in your support forum with some more details. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Again wicked theme. I just finished going through all the themes available here, and none even come close to what you've got here. Plus with bootswatches available too... it just gets better.

The latest "stable" version of 2.1 was merged into master last week on Tuesday the 17th of July.
