Most likely this is not the fault of vanilla. Spam protection works differently. Most likely someone in your server's IP range has been spreading some malware. If I were you, I would contact the host.
I think is Gmail to much intelligent! Hotmail don't care of that. I now think it' normal cause the system identifies itself to users by an arbitrary email choosed by admin.
