Can't "start a discussion"

computergeniuscomputergenius In the hills inland from Malaga New
edited October 2012 in Vanilla 2.0 - 2.8

I have just installed Vanilla forums - but, as admin, I can't seem to post the First Discussion.

I have added two categories.

I click on the "start discussion" (I would have expected to click on a category, but none of them have any posts yet).

I can add a title, and add the body text, but the category drop down is greyed, and I can't select a category.

Have I missed something / screwed something up?

    Your answer may be here:

What are your default category permissions?
    what are your category permissions?
Is this checked or not - Display root categories as headings?

I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.

    Thanks for you suggestions.

What are your default category permissions?

    They are all checked

    what are your category permissions?

I am not sure what the difference is. Do you mean "my user group category permissions"?
I am logged in as Admin, and can start discussions, but they are appearing in Root category.
When I add a discussion, the category drop down is greyed out.

Is this checked or not - Display root categories as headings?

    Yes

    Yes

    Uncheck it then

Yes, that was it - thanks a lot.

Did I miss it in the documentation?

Now I am going to look at subcategories...

    Ha - subcategories was simple!

But I would still like to know where I missed "Display root categories as headings", because there might be more "traps" in there.

It's in the Dashboard, under Forums - Categories

if its not there just add it to the wiki so others can learn what you just learned.
