Will any of the Vanilla Addons ever come with the default download?

I'm wondering if any of the Vanilla Addons will ever be packed with the default download?

Nope, it'd kinda defeat the object, don't you think?

IMO, the default Vanilla is a bit too light. I know that's the goal, and there is nothing on my discussion board that I don't need. Which is really, really cool. But maybe the most used/useful extensions should be pre-installed with the package, and not activated? Just a thought.

It could also be something for addon developers to work towards; trying to get one of there addons integrated into the default install. I can understand why it is kept as it is mind.

Ok, yes, you'll have to add some extensions that you want to use.... and it may take a couple of minutes But that's much better than having to delete extensions you don't want to use! And it means that you have much more control over everything, from comment formatting to feeds :)

to enjoy the pleasure of 'DIY',you'd better to add every extension that you really need

What I'd like to see in the Add-on system Mark created, is the possibilty to add add-ons to a "shopping-basket" and download them all in one zip-package :D Ofcourse it should save to your preferences :)

Jazzman, that would be a cool feature. :)

The main problem with including extensions with the main app is version control; as a smaller percentage of extensions and themes are being written by mark, he has no way to ensure that the download package includes the latest versions of everything.

Also, it ends up favoring some extensions over others, when several accomplish the same thing.

Maybe if a specific developer writes quite a few useful extensions, that individual may release an "amped-up" version of Vanilla publicly for download with some of those add-ons pre-installed.

I don't really see why it is so difficult to just browse through the addons and pick what you want to install, then install them. Seriously, if you can't take the time to put some thought into what you want for your board then you probably shouldn't be administrating it in the first place.

I think that the bare bones release of the software is great! Just pick and choose what you want on it!

Though I mentioned my idea above, as a mere possibility, I agree with you RogueFoxx. I've come to enjoy finding new and useful extensions and installing them myself. Once discovered, it take usually less than a few minutes for me to download to my computer, upload to my server and go into Vanilla and install. The process is almost too easy.

Maybe there could be two versions?

The plain version and a version that comes with a few select plugins that are considered "essential".

    I have a better idea...

If you guys start to actually rate the addons, I can build up a metric based on your ratings and create a new list on the addons site of "essential add-ons" as rated by you guys. I can create one page where all of those essentials can be downloaded from.

I won't be adding any of them to the core. Ever. I want people to be very aware of the addons site and all that is possible with Vanilla. Otherwise they'll make the mistake of thinking that the addons that come with Vanilla are all you get. Never underestimate the public's ability to remain completely oblivious of the obvious.

I like that idea, giginger sounds really good. Two versions would be a great way of doing it.

Mark just said that there will not be any add-ons added to the core, ever. I really doubt that this is up for debate.

I do think that we should all start rating the addons though, as Mark said as well. A new list of "essential add-ons" on the add-ons page would be great!

vivento posted that just after Mark, and probably didn't see Mark's post before posting.
  • With the time this software will be bigger and bigger. Maybe no one remember the 1º releases of PhpNuke, or phpBB, they where very lite in comparation that they are now. So the problem is not "Will any of the Vanilla Addons ever come with the default download". The question is, "Will Vanilla progress without losing the initial idea?" Sorry my poor and also bad english :)

The only changes I plan on making to the core are bugfixes (should the need arise), adding of delegates (on-demand), and any improvements in speed or portability (ie. porting to other databases). Other than that I can only see myself removing more from the core.

I'm all about keeping it simple. I'll let you guys complicate things :)

That's it. Mark cares about the very core and the software will remain light and even improve. Imagine adding any possible add-on at the same time, that would extremely waste traffic and computing power!

Some interesting feature would be downloading extensions from Vanilla straight onto the server. Maybe it could get complicated, but that would be pretty unique as well. :)

Awesome. You have all convinced me. If this turned into something like PHPNuke I would cry!!

I like the shopping cart idea.

    Indeed.

Shopping Basket would rule... Downloading every add on separately takes muchos time, especially after the first install. I will get rating the addons, once they all work properly ;)

Fine with me... just don't call it a shopping basket. Ack!

Thats right, I did! So I didn't realise he had allready said that! (Sorry to disrupt the topic!)

You could just add a *few* of the addons to the core... Only joking! ;) Everyone that has used an addon give it a rating.. :)
  • This is open software, so the people that think there are an essential extension list could release their own version which had them pre-installed. I don't see why there couldn't be third-party releases. I could be wrong though?

Yeah, there really does have to be a shopping list or something.

As it is, its a bit of a pain to go through and download each extension you want one at a time. Maybe somebody could put together a system which would keep a listing of all the extensions in plain folder format, then once the user has selected the folders they wanted, it would make copies of those folders and zip them up into one file.

    I would love that.

What about copying extensions straight onto ones forum? That would be coool!

There's a security risk involved with letting a link insert arbitrary php code into the extensions folder.
