Hello.

I am totaly new here. i have tried smf before, but the themes and page setup was not for me. so now i am trying vanilla.
I got a big problem and if i cant fix it, i cannot use vanilla :neutral_face:

I cannot get language to work.
I have also tried it on vanilla 2.0. No good.

This is what i do:

Go on my dashboard on my forum kosf.no
Hit applications
Get more applications
fint a languagepack for vanilla 2
download and put the nb-no folder in /locales and enable in locales on dashboard and change default locale to norwegian.

Nothing happens.

  • Did you delete the locale_map.ini in the cache folder?

    Good point, @schuchi‌

    I just tried it on my local install.

    It didn't work the first time.

    I had to go back into Dashboard, and reset nb_No as the default locale.

    Remember to click Save!

    After that, it worked.

  • i did now as you sayd, i removed the locale_map.ini nothing is changing, i also did as you whu606 but no text is changing to norwegian

    post the text in locale_map.ini

    what version of vanilla are you using? You say 2.0 and you post in Vanilla version category 2.0 help.

    I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.

    When you go back to the Dashboard, is nb-NO set as the default locale?

    Make sure you click Save.

    As you can see, it is working on my test install.

    Try clearing all the ini files from the cache folder.

    I have locales here
    customers/f/c/4/kosf.no/httpd.www/locales
    but that is not right?
    what is customers?
    it just should be kosf.no/locales?

    the locale map.ini file is empty

    Delete all .ini files in the cache folder.

    Within your site's website folders, there should be a folder called Vanilla.

    In there is a folder called locales.

    That is where the nb-NO should be.

    However, if you are getting the option to set your locale, then clearly the install can see the Norwegian locale.

    Look in the folder conf for the file conf.php

    You should see a line like this:

    // EnabledLocales
    $Configuration['EnabledLocales']['vf_nb_NO'] = 'nb-NO';

    If it is there, then under

    //Garden

    add the following:

    $Configuration['Garden']['Locale'] = 'nb-NO';

  • This what i have in my webfolder:

    If i go on application i find the vanilla folder and locales but if i just put it there. i cannot find it in my addons - locales

    This is my conf file. everything is in order there it seems

  • do i need to make a folder called vanilla? because i have just put the files from the folder in there.. not a folder

    No, what you have is fine.

    Make sure that the nb-No locale file is in the folder locale

    Do you have any kind of minify plugin enabled, or something else active that might cache your files?

    if you just post the contents of cache/locale_map.ini

    we can see if the locale is getting added to your cache file. then we can determine from their.

    if you see it in cache/locale_map.ini

    your locale_map.ini would show some indications of Norwegian locale files.

    e.g..

    [nb-NO]
    0 = "/var/www/vanilla/locales/vf_nb_NO/archive_core.php"
    1 = "/var/www/vanilla/locales/vf_nb_NO/dash_core.php"
    2 = "/var/www/vanilla/locales/vf_nb_NO/definitions.php"
    3 = "/var/www/vanilla/locales/vf_nb_NO/missing.php"
    4 = "/var/www/vanilla/locales/vf_nb_NO/site_core.php"
    5 = "/var/www/vanilla/conf/locale.php"

    also your dashboard would show this after saving and reloading the page. and you see the save button is translated as well.

    sometimes you need to click save twice!

    if your locale_map.ini shows NO indication of Norwegian locale files then whu606 is probably right about some caching issues.

    as a test you can try to see if changing a single definition via locale.php works.

    http://vanillaforums.org/discussion/26597/tutorial-how-to-change-wording-how-to-change-text-how-to-change-language-how-to-change-locale

    if neither work then you need to explore if you are caching the ini files somehow.

  • I have now removed vanilla, and going to try to install it again.

    what crash? it was a new install and whu606 just installed it and it worked, if its this much hassel to get a nother language to work i dont think i am going to be using vanilla. i give it one more try :smiley:

    cache is not crash,

    what is so hard for you, just simply post this info. Is it language problem or technical skill.

    post the information in your locale_map.ini

  • Sorry i read it wrong i meant cache not crash :blush: As i sayd yesterday the locale_map.ini was empty. So clearly its a problem there :smile: i am going to install the vanilla forum a little later and then i can post the info.

    I realy appreciate that you are trying to help me!

  • As i sayd yesterday the locale_map.ini was empty.

    I must have missed that.

    make sure you /cache folder is writeable and has the same permissions and ownership as /conf folder.

    I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.

  • Thanks! i will check that when i install :)

    1 = "/customers/f/c/4/kosf.no/httpd.www/forum/applications/conversations/locale/en-CA/definitions.php"

    Thats what my locale.map.ini is saying. should i just delete that file now? and then install the norwegian language? or delete it after?

    don't delete the locale.map.ini yet. no need to

    install the Norwegian locale enable it. save it.

    select as default. then press save after enabled. and then press save again.

    then post the locale.map.ini

    then if it doesn't seem to work.

    delete the locale.map.ini

    go to dashboard and select Norwegian locale and press save twice,

    then post the locale.map.ini again.

    You, will also find that if you can't stay on the forum for at least a half hour to try to troubleshoot with someone and respond relatively quickly, you can potentially drag the problem on forever and give up in frustration.
