When will Vanilla Forum has automatic update like Wordpres?

Automatic update is great option. Wordpress done this. So when will see automatic update? Any idea? Is it possible for Vanilla? Thanks.

That is different from automatic updates. And yes they have thought about doing that here too. Not sure when it will happen. Or if it will happen.

The next best thing is a plugin that will notify you of an update. There is one for plugins but not sure it also notifies for the vanilla software update as well. Maybe @peregrine has an idea.

Some hosts that offer thrid party installations also offer update notification and it is just pressing update button . But this is also not fail proof. Because before you update you always need to disable plugins and themes to make sure they don't cause a problem.

There really is nothing better than making sure you are installing properly personally and manually to avoid problems.

Automated updates are incredibly tricky and the development effort would be enormous. We investigated this back in 2009 and backed away from it. We don't have the resources to undertake it anytime soon.

Not to mention that you'd need a zero-backward-compatibility-breaks policy like WordPress, which we also don't currently do.

I've got a space ship now, I just don't have reliable or low-cost internet access . Internet Access especially bad when flying in the Andromeda Galaxy.

Wordpress only forces you to update if you do not do it manually. Which is a problem if you have customized the software.

Automatic updates are not recommended in my opinion because too many things can fail.

My real problem is that upgrading vanilla is very difficult via ftp. Wordpress.org solved this issue, I will expect from Vanilla developers too. It helps a lot.

The thing is that wordpress has about 50 updates per year and Vanilla only updates every other year. The updates you are seeing with 2.1 have been crucial security updates which once fixed there should be no other need to update. So the update button would gather dust while waiting for an update once every few years.

The point is that Wordpress updates all the time and very often. Vanilla does not do it as often.

Yes , around june 27 th to be precise , but in my opinion I just don't see the need as with wordpress with updates every other week making your custom changes null every time thank you Michel Valdrighi
