Is anyone else getting bored seeing the latest ver of blah blah is on GITHUB?

What is the point of having OPEN SOURCE Vanilla community and redirecting so many addons to Github?
If Ver lower than 2.1 are not being supported any more, but you still see verified next to an addon.
If they are the latest VER why are they not on Vanilla, if you want a donation lets have free and Paid list, and donate on a free addon if you are 100% happy with it.
As a user not a developer i don't have a clue what to do on Github, I put my forum up to help expats free, not study web production.

  • @DenisS that is a misconception of what Open Source is

The clue in the word 'source' as in source code. The whole concept of OS is around contribution, and distribution of code. Github does that effectively. Naturally it has quite a lot to do with developers.

The fact that you get it for free is merely a coincidence.

    grep is your friend.

Then perhaps you chose the wrong forum solution?

    Why go open source?

Community is just getting started or is a hobby.
Tight budget but plenty of time to invest.
Value tinkering & creativity over stability & scaling.
Require a major customization that isn't cost-effective in the cloud.

I'm not sure why people imagine that coming on here and being 'grumpy' or 'snarky' is an effective method of communicating their needs.

@DenisS: GitHub seems only in the beginning complicated. Give it a try and you'll like it. You don't have to be a coder to use GitHub. It serves you also if you need plugin updates or want to read or inform developers about specific problems or ideas you'd love to see in a next version. When something is for free you usually have to to adept at some point to how it works.

I'm not "grumpy" or Snarky I'm stating a fact, I have communicated my needs many times most of the time with a solution from some very helpful members.
We all have different skills, some members understand that the main thing that makes a community is exactly this, not comments if you don't like it go somewhere else. That is not comment worthy of Vannila community as a whole and defiantly should not from a moderator. Thanks for your comments phreak and x00 at lease they are are constructive.

    @DenisS

Not looking to get into a row.

If you want to misconstrue what I said, go ahead.

My impression of your initial post was that it was 'snarky', and re-reading it has done nothing to change that impression.

@DenisS FWIW, I'd love to do as you wish and always have everything perfectly updated here. The reality is, we need help to do that. There's only a few core developers and we're stretched very thin. It's a tremendous amount of work & coordination to maintain the open source side on top of company responsibilities. Suggestions and strategies for getting the community to take care of more processes like this are welcome. My link above was my best suggestion thus far of doing so. I simply don't have an entire weekend to devote to combing thru the directory for what things aren't perfectly up to date.

  • Github integration would be tremendously helpful.

    My suggestion:
If you (the vanilla team) already have ideas about the architecture of the github integration for the addons repository, please share them with us, or create method stubs, for example. I would love to help with this, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

Having talked with @linc in the past about it I know we are open to ideas and suggestions. I think that was the purpose of this thread: http://vanillaforums.org/discussion/27970/addons-directory-version-2/p1

As not to derail this thread, I will bump that one.
