Making a Vanilla forum 'invite-only'?

So, I've got a phpBB forum (I know... lame, whatevs...) that I want to convert to Vanilla but I'm using a really great phpBB plugin that makes the whole place invite-only and comes with a rather nifty little invite generator. Seems like it wouldn't be tough since Vanilla seems to have some sort of approval process built in to the new member process. Could you just lock down the forums somehow?
