Server 404 On First Login and all Discussions

My Vanilla installation went smoothly after setting permissions appropriately. When I first log in, I get a server 404 error. If I hit the browser "back" button and try again it works. This is consistent, happens each time. I can access all areas of the discussion forum (Categories, Search, Settings, Account) except Discussions, where I also get a 404 error. I can create discussions but not access them. I am a non-IS professional, advanced PC user, occasional Linux user, new webmaster for my Homeowners Association's new website. The website was built with Symfony. The 404 error pages have a Symfony logo on them. I am not sure if this is relevant. Any advice is gratefully appreciated.
