Display the Categories in the panel of a discussion page?

I don't mind that the main landing page is the Discussions tab, but I'd like the user to see a list of available categories in the discussion tab of 1.1.8 (the same way we see them on this site, along with the number of threads). Is there some code, or an extension that I can use? I've searched several times, but come up with nothing.

id rather have the categories as main. Anyone know how to acomplish this?
