Adding custom fields to the profile

I'd like to add a couple custom fields to the default profile block. Does this need done via a plugin (never written one, don't know PHP, etc.) or can this be edited in Vanilla directly?

I haven't really come across a solution to this. This link gives a bit of info for starters, http://vanillaforums.org/discussion/16502/custom-registration-form/p1 but besides that nothing else.

Well, the information I'm attempting to collect isn't really required at login but would be considered more along the lines of profile information. Thanks though.
