Vanilla 2 setcookie value

I am integrating Vanilla 2 with my current user database on my website. I am able to to insert a new user into the database. I am also able to login to Vanilla after I make the user. Right now my users have to login two times once from my website and another from my Vanilla. I was going to ask is there a way I can set a cookie so Vanilla would think the user was logged in?

I was thinking I could set some session values in the database then do a setcookie in PHP. I was just going to see what the values need to be and how to get them?
