We don't support animated gifs by default because we can't resize them properly. If you want an animated gif avatar you'll need to do the following:
Set the following config setting:
$Configuration['Garden']['Thumbnail']['SaveGif'] = TRUE;in your config.php.Make sure you upload an avatar that is within your allowed avatar size.

i doubt it will work if you just upload it, but it might if you replace the uploaded image and thumb manually with the animated gif versions

nope, it doesnt work coz vanilla makes system thumbnail automatically.

I may not provide the completed solution you might desire, but I do try to provide honest suggestions to help you solve your issue.
As far as I'm concerned, Vanilla not supporting animated gif avatars isn't a bug or a problem—it's a value-add feature.
