Hello.
My team is currently working on a community forum for our project (an online social game).

Our basic requirement (apart from custom theming) is to add additional fields to user profiles and show them on profile page and discussion page.

We're using Vanilla 2.0.18.4 with jsConnect and jsConnect Auto Signin plugins to sign in our users to forum automatically using their ID from social network. This works fine except a little hack that we used to force user to re-login on load by setting cookies (thanks to the Vanilla community forums: http://vanillaforums.org/discussion/16258/force-re-login).

In our game players have a nickname, a class (warrior/stalker/shaman) and a level which must be shown under their username in every post and also in their profile.

The level information is constantly updated and all player information is stored in a PostgreSQL database.

Where to get started? Would this be a plugin? Can anyone give any directions on how to accomplish this?

Before I get started, I want to clarify that my tone is "contemplative and hopeful", rather than "angry, whiney ranting".

Over the last six months, I've been trying to find a plugin or hack that will give me some control over the Panel (what everyone else in the world would call a "Sidebar"). I'm a moderately decent PHP developer, but the Panel "module" is so obfuscated in MVC coding practices, that I can't get my head around how to build a plugin that can do what I need without digging into the Vanilla core (obviously a big no-no).

I shamelessly admit that I'm a spaghetti-code-cowboy, and while I am trying to embrace OOP in the context of a scripting environment like PHP, I tend towards the more pragmatic "let's get it done yesterday" approach, rather than the "I'm writing software for a nuclear power plant" approach.

I do think Vanilla is an awesome platform, and the developers have done a great job producing clean code, even if the MVC pattern is a different flavor of Kool-Aide than I'm used to drinking (I'm usually nose-deep in WordPress).

Our Vanilla friends could could take a lesson from the the WordPress Sidebar/Widget strategy. Specifically, multiple "Sidebars" can be registered with a theme, and "Widgetized" plugins can be associated with the Sidebars.

I'll continue hacking away at the Panel for now, but Vanilla, please consider giving us friendly Sidebars!

our community for example is creating new discussions daily and some of them stay up in the list forever and only a handful of people is interested in participating.might help to keep the discussions list clean, according to each users needs. maybe in combination with a button where the discussionTabs are, which shows ignored discussions so you can easily UnIgnore them

Hi all,
I installed jsConnect on my development forum and created, with a good deal of cursing, a page that returns the details of the logged in user on an ecommerce (the awful Magento framework). I made some tests manually, and I can see that the User Data is returned correctly. I also used the Test URL in Vanilla, and I can see the details.

When I go to the forum, I can see the button "Sign in with Test Ecommerce" (i.e. my ecommerce), but it doesn't do much. Actually, it doesn't do anything.

My doubt is that I could have misconfigured jsConnect on Vanilla. In fact, I'm not sure of what should I enter in fields Sign In Url and Register Url. I tried entering the Sign In and Register Urls of the ecommerce, but then, when I click on the Sign In button, it just goes to the User Control Panel on the ecommerce, since user is already logged in, and nothing happens. User doesn't get created in Vanilla and, obviously, he doesn't get logged in.

Additional note
I just noticed that, if I log in on the ecommerce, then I go on the forum, the message I get is "Howdy, Stranger!". Shouldn't it show my ecommerce User Name, or my name instead?

It's clear that I'm missing something. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Howdy. I am currently working on theming my Vanilla Forums install and the current order of business is to setup a default.master.tpl Smarty template. Looking at the PHP version, I notice that the following method is called towards the end, presumably so that plugins can do something after the main page content has been rendered:

<?php $this->FireEvent('AfterBody'); ?>

The docs for template tags are here:

http://vanillaforums.com/blog/category/help/template-tags-help-topics/

There is no mention of the FireEvent call in the above list and the default.master.tpl template found under the stock mobile theme also does not have anything like this in it.

So my question is whether there is a Smarty based way to keep the same functionality or do we lose the ability to have plugins called via events if we go with Smarty templates over the PHP based views? It is definitely preferable to reduce to the amount of layout tangled up with program logic which is why going with Smarty for the templates is very much preferred.

Cheers

To clarify, I still want 'all discussions' to be the page people see when they visit: http://chairexerciseisforyou.net/forum/

However, I want the banner image to instead link to:
http://chairexerciseisforyou.net/

Alternatively, if this is to complicated, what is the easiest way for me to add a 'home' button (directed to http://chairexerciseisforyou.net/) to the main nav bar on the forum?

Please go easy on me. I have taught myself html and css. I can manage javascript too where necessary. However, Vanilla is very new to me and I haven't a clue on PHP.

I can however follow instructions very well! So, if there are any for this, please can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Kerry

This addon adds 3 extra menu links. Though they are not viewable to unauthenticated users. How would I go about setting the permissions on these?
If not, is there possibly someone who could point me in the right direction to adding a few more menu items myself and allowing them to be viewable to all users/roles?

Thanks

Do you want to help bring new users to Vanilla? Today when I was checking out a software loading program site I checked Vanilla and there is ZERO ratings....

Please go to these pages and rate Vanilla... if possible also give it a review. The more the better. Give it the best rating you feel it deserves as possible and make this community and platform a real winner.

http://www.softaculous.com/rate/Vanilla

If anyone can add more ratings links to this thread it would be appreciated.

I'm hoping that a badge can be given as well as points for submitting a rating.

As a recent joining member I was surprised to see the ZERO rating. I hope we can change that now...

add links to your sites as well as anything else you want to share.

Thanks
