Hi. First of all I want to thank Vanilla team and the community for great work on this project.
Vanilla finally brings common sense to forum software and it's exactly what forum should look like.

However the problem that we encountered during the work on our project was lack of full documentation for developers.

We're currently building an online social game community and need to develop a custom theme for our forums and also add some custom functionality which is not included in the basic package or plugins.
Our team didn't find the required information in the documentation area so we had to purchase a few custom premium themes to disassemble them and see how they're made. Basically we're now reading the source code and trying to figure out how things work.

My questing for the team and dev community is how does a vanilla developer get started?

Where to refer when basic CSS editing is not enough?

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, I'm having a new video-streaming site be developed and we would like to allow people to comment on the videos ala youtube, however we also would like those comments to be in a forum interface as well.
I've been looking into using Vanilla forums because of the available plugins, theming, moderation tools, and ease of use, but there are a couple of things I'm not sure are easily possible.

One issue is that we'd like to have the rails application automatically create new Categories and/or Discussions when the application creates new Series or Video uploads in our CMS (and set permissions, first post data, etc). Secondly, we'd like to display the comments below the video but in a custom (highly simplified) view (with a link that goes to the full forum view), e.g. just query the comments from a discussion and redisplay them in custom rails views.
Can this all be done by directly modifying the database? Is there some simpler solution with an API or RSS feeds or direct http: requests?
I can't seem to find any decent documentation on how to accomplish this.

Thanks for any help.

           -oop basics
-read the documentation on site about mvc
    b) learn some debugging skills with your browser
            - obtain firefox and firebug
            - or chrome or some other web browser where you can inspect elements
            - watch some videos on how to debug with firebug or whatever
    c) get an editor and modify some programs.

3) read discussions on vanilla forum even if they don't pertain to what you are looking for - you might get some ideas.

4) read the documentation - read the wiki - add to the wiki, if you can.

5) try to solve other people's question. If you can find a working solution to someone else's question - provide an answer.

6) learn how to frame a question - so someone will understand what you want.
         - include you version, theme, screenshot, and any other pertinent info
that might help the person helping you.

7) download plugins, themes, etc - try to digest them, modify them, experiment.
          - look at various function calls people use in plugins
          - download the example plugin and experiment
          - read the theme tips provided by 422 and others.
          - read the wiki that hbf volunteered to create

8) slowly look at the different files in vanilla
           particularly the helper_functions.php in vanilla/views/discussion and vanilla/views/discussions

9) don't be afraid to modify the core on your test box - if it will teach you something. than after you understand the change - write a plugin that does what you want and remove changes from the core.

10) make your suggestions in a non-abusive way. Remember everyone is learning and most are volunteering their time gratis and the development team of vanilla consists of a small group with only so much time in the day. Instead of gripeing contribute. If you learned something new that you struggled with but now understand either through your own solution or with somebody elses help - add it to the wiki.

11) read 1-10 again, and then one more time and then...

.... add your own tips

in some themes, and some apps. I noticed experimenting that if you make a block fixed, it floats down the page with you, as you scroll. it works perfectly, yet when it is embedded it loses the ability to move as you scroll. also some themes seem to loose some functionality. I tested the Bootstrap @kasperisager embedded in wordpress and I believe the control bar that slides normally when not embedded becomes fixed in place.

I'm just curious how to solve some of these issues when embedded in wordpress, if anyone knows how to solve them, if it is possible.
