Mark, I've got two vanilla forums, one of which I can't connect to (which is on the same server, although I can connect to another vanilla forum which is on a different server. Any ideas?

Hey again! Since my Van2Chat in fact isn't a chat, but a shoutbox, i would like to rename the plugin... But that doesnt work, the Upload new version function says the "Key" changed from Van2Chat to Van2Shout, which is not permitted... Can't you delete the old plugin, and give my new plugin the count of downloads back or so? Or just change the name of the plugin in the database? Thanks, Caerostris

Hey mark! I know, you have to be bored about that, but whats about ldap support? I defnitly isnt impossible, and ldap is an important way of authentication... (In my opinion more important then a google login ;-) Cant you implement it? Thanks, Caerostris

      caerostris
Sorry, *It defnitly isnt impossible ;-)
    • Mark
      Mark
We haven't had anyone ask for this yet, so which one is more "important" is debatable :)
    • caerostris
      caerostris
Im sorry, but thats not true...
There are two forum posts asking for ldap ;-)

      But ok, its still debatable...;)

I really would like to have ldap support, i tried to figure out how i could do this by myself, but i think thats impossible for me, my php skills (and vanilla2, and ldap skills) just arent good enough... ;-)

But, cant you implement it in future versions, or write a plugin for this?
(But a new button "sign in using ldap" instead of sign in using gmail" wouldnt make sense, you would have to implement it into the default password prompt...)

By the way, vanilla is realy great work...
Im looking for an (free) alternative since a few weeks (because the ldap support), but i couldnt find any forum software which gave me that (hard to explain) *sweet* feeling ;-)

Joomla! Is close to it, and supports ldap, but the ldap module of joomla doesnt work for me... So no reason to migrate ;-)
      Keep up the good work!

Let me rephrase: we've never had a paying customer ask for it. Until we do, it is not a priority for us.
    • caerostris
      caerostris
Oh, thats very painfull to me...
What i liked about vanilla was that it was (or better it seemed to be)
more community developed (or inspired), i just got joomlas ldap working...

So, thats really bad news for me, since like pervisously said, i really like vanillas feeling...

If your only developing for money, i'll stop developing plugins for you...

Because i release them to make some people have fun, not to gain money!
    • caerostris
      caerostris
      Ok, i calmed down a bit ;-)

      Its just,
      I hate that
"you give me money, i give you what you want",
Hope you know what i mean...

I will defnitly stop activly developing my vanilla2 addons,
But i just want you to know that i respect that you released this all for free...

Since i want to use a forum software, which is really 100% free, and not just free as its cureently developed, i won't (i can't) use vanilla anymore.

Have a great day, make a lot of money,
      Regards,

      Caerostris

We cannot keep working on Vanilla unless we can make enough money to pay ourselves. It would be fantastic if we could develop for free, but this is the real world, not a cartoon.

Open source means "freedom", not "free". The freedom to take this awesome software and use it as you like, not relying on us to make changes for you. You can develop whatever you need (including an ldap plugin). The onus should not be on us to develop these things for you for free.
    • caerostris
      caerostris
Yap, allcthat is true, and in everything you said youre right...

But there are some people (including me) who develope those things for fun, i thought you'ld be one of them...

But of course, freedom is not free...

I'll look if i can figure out how to write a plugin like this, maybe i can ask you if i need some help with some functions or so?
      Vanilla isnt that good documented...

Ah, and dont give a sh*t at what i said above, i noticed that group mapping doesnt work with J!1.6, so its useless for me...

I'll start immediatelly developing a ldap plugin, maybe you can have a look at the source when i get it ready? (*if* i get it ready)
Secure programming isnt that thing im familar with, and a login should be save ;-)

So, now realy nice meant regards, caerostris :D

We are working on improving the documentation :)

Of course you can and should ask for help with developing your stuff here on the community forum. There are plenty of people here that work with the code every day and can help you out. The core devs also spend a number of hours on the community forum every week trying to help out where we can.
    • caerostris

Would you like to stay informed about my dev-status?
I could easily setup a bugtracker or something like this, or i could informyou by mail...

Or arent you intersted in it?
(The question is not meant ironic ;-)

Hey mark, First of all thanks for making the sweetest forum on web. Next, I got a quick question to ask, wont take more than a 30 seconds to answer. Sometime, back in vanilla discussions you have said -"The best way to get great SEO is to create a forum on a subdomain of your domain" Well, is it equally good for sub-directory? I wanted to install vanilla in my WP powered blog gtricks.com as gtricks.com/forum/ . Or should I go for forum.gtricks.com. Regards, Abhishek

Yeah! A subfolder works just as well (possibly better) than a subdomain.

Thanks for the answer Mark. By the way, I came to know that you had a short stay in India and traveled a lot in south. Well, north India isnt as exquisite as South, but definitely gives a different experience. Come and enjoy.

Hi! Do you know how to fix this problem: 1 - remove the scroll from a form of activity, 2 - that the text was transferred to a new line in the form of activity on the user page?

how close is 2.1 - would like to start let my community play with vanilla 2 - but as days don't matter, I would like to start with 2.1 so I don't need to upgrade everything a couple of days after launching the forum

@vegano - We haven't set an official release date for it. We'd like it to be a very stable release, so we're working our way through the bug list and finishing up remaining features. We'll keep doing minor releases so the community can test all of the bugfixes before putting a stick in the sand with 2.1.
