Issue using....
The theme I use is @kasperisager's Apptastic which is here - https://github.com/kasperisager/Apptastic - But the theme is made for for 2.1, not 2.0.18.4.
The menu colour is achieved by replacing a single graphic file and the footer I added myself.
To set categories as standard view, that's also an option on the admin dashboard.

A) Split / Merge. Simply impossible to administer a forum without this.
B) Button bar.
C) Both the above, Botstop, Stop forum spam.

Dashboard > Appearance > Homepage
For Categories Layout, use mixed.
Change "Choose the page people should see when they visit:" to Categories if you want visitors to arrive at the Categories page by default.
