Throttle E-mail notifications?

The e-mail notification system can send out a new email everytime there is a new discussion or comment. However, this is produces way too many email notifications to my users. Is there a way to do ANY of the following?
1) Stop sending notifications unti they visit the forum
2) Option to send a daily digest instead of instant?
3) something else?!

You should disable Advanced Notifications for non-staff members. It's not really meant to be on for everyone.
It's not currently possible to use a digest because Vanilla has no native ability to fire asynchronous, timed events.
