Search for the classes responsible for searching, and refer to the Doxygen auto generated documentation, it will tell x class is in y file. I shared the docs in this forum. Search for it.

I'm not so familiar with Mediawiki myself... Searching user guides only show text on including HTML in articles http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:HTML_in_wikitext I don't think the sanitizer would let PHP in that easy... Why don't you try?
